A foundation constituted under civil law, the Institute for the History of the German Jews (Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden – IGdJ) is publicly administered by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Since its establishment in 1966, it has been dedicated to studying of the German-Jewish past and present, imparting the resulting knowledge to the public, and fostering young scholars
